How Your Family Can Receive Money
Bank deposit works at all major Philippine banks including BDO, BPI, Metrobank, Land Bank, and UnionBank. The recipient provides their account number (10-12 digits) and the bank’s SWIFT code. GCash, with over 82 million registered users, is the dominant mobile wallet. Maya (formerly PayMaya) is the second-largest. Cash pickup is available at Cebuana Lhuillier, M Lhuillier, and RD Pawnshop locations nationwide.
Critical: GCash wallets must be fully KYC-verified to receive international remittances, per WorldRemit’s Philippines documentation. Unverified wallets cannot receive international transfers. Transfers to unverified wallets are automatically cancelled. Confirm your recipient’s verification status before initiating the first GCash transfer. Monthly limit: PHP 100,000 total per wallet in international remittances.

The Exchange Rate and the 1% US Tax
Before opening any transfer app, search ‘USD to PHP exchange rate’ on Google or XE.com. The rate Google shows is the mid-market rate. If your platform’s offered rate is lower, the gap is a margin the platform keeps. On a $500 transfer with a 2% margin, your family receives approximately 1,000 pesos less than at the mid-market rate. On monthly sends that is 12,000 pesos per year invisible on any receipt.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (Public Law 119-21), effective January 1, 2026, adds a 1% excise tax only to cash-funded US transfers. Digital transfers funded by bank account or debit card are exempt per IRS IRC Section 4475(d). Remitly confirms this on their own platform.
